Dr. Gorawara-Bhat’s research expertise includes qualitative methods (in-depth interviewing, cognitive interviewing, focus groups, etc) and survey methods (questionnaire design) as applied to research issues in medicine. Her research, among other issues, focuses on the development, effective combination, and utilization of Qualitative Methodologies in Diabetes and Aging research. She consults for various projects in Diabetes research on the optimal designs for appropriate techniques both, patient empowerment interventions, and, physician modes for propagating attitude and behavior change in patients with diabetes. Her work also includes consulting with diabetes research groups on 1) optimal ways of organizing and coordinating all aspects of qualitative data collection, and 2) processing and analyzing transcribed data using methods such as extraction of themes and content analysis of the qualitative data. She has collaborated on the design of a videotape to empower patients with diabetes to become more active in their care, and is presently collaborating on the Children’s Diabetes Prevention Program in providing guidance for conducting the semi-structured interviews with community leaders, as well as the focus groups with parents and children.
